Folic acid is necessary for every bodily function that requires cell division. It is especially important in the development of a fetus: it helps promote the growth of compounds essential to brain and nervous system function. Even so, as many as 9 in 10 adults do not consume enough.

In pregnancy, the need for folates increases, meaning pregnant women must up the intake. A balanced and healthy diet does not ensure adequate quantities of folates. The folates in food are sensitive to light and warmth, which is why up to 80 % are destroyed during preparation and thermal treatment.

Epidemiological studies have shown that a daily intake of 400 to 800 μg of folic acid during said period can lower potential neural tube defects (Spina bifida) by 50 to 72 %.

However, folic acid becomes biologically active only after it is converted to tetrahydrofolate (THF). THF occurs in the liver with the help of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme. New studies have shown that for 50 % of women, the conversion of folic acid into an active form of folate is affected due to lowered activity of the MTHRF enzyme. For 10 % of population, the conversion is down by 70 %, while for 40 % of the female population, it is down 30 %.
