Description

The Saccharomyces boulardii probiotic yeast is categorised as a biotherapeutic agent for treating diarrhea and inflammatory diseases of the intestines. It was named after Henri Boulard, who first isolated it from lychee fruit in 1920. He became interested in individuals who, after consuming the fruit, noticed certain health benefits. It was discovered that the effects were down to a special yeast in the fruit’s skin.

According to research, the yeast protects us against pathogenic microorganisms (bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infections), modulates the immune response, reduces inflammation and the excretion of electrolytes (dehydration), inhibits bacterial toxins and encourages enzyme activity and the activity of special nutrients carriers in the intestinal mucosa. Its distinctive feature is its transient activity, which means it doesn’t settle in the intestine – it is excreted in the faeces in 2–5 days after last intake.

Its consumption is recommended for prevention and treatment of diarrhea due to various causes and in various forms: taking antibiotics, enteral nutrition, infection with Clostridium difficile bacteria, traveler’s diarrhea and acute diarrhea. It may take effect immediately, reduce the intensity and frequency of diarrhea and improve the consistency of the faeces.
